While not a literal resurrection, scientists, particularly at Colossal Biosciences, are actively working to "de-extinct" the woolly mammoth by genetically engineering Asian elephants to resemble and have the cold-hardiness of the extinct species, with a goal of having the first calf by late 2028.

As a step toward the larger goal, scientists have also created genetically modified mice with some woolly mammoth traits, which can help them understand the genetic basis of cold adaptation.
