Many species have become extinct throughout history, including the dodo bird, Thylacine (Tasmanian tiger), passenger pigeon, and Steller's sea cow, to name a few. These extinctions have occurred due to various factors, including habitat loss, climate change, and hunting by humans.


Prehistoric Period

  • Non-avian dinosaurs: Extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, around 66 million years ago. 

  • Saber-toothed cats (like Smilodon): Extinct during the Late Pleistocene, around 10,000 years ago. 

  • Giant ground sloths: Extinct during the Late Pleistocene, around 10,000 years ago. 

  • Woolly mammoths: Extinct during the Late Pleistocene, with some populations persisting into the Holocene (10,000 years ago). 

  • Irish elk: Extinct during the Late Pleistocene, around 10,000 years ago. 

Holocene (Last 10,000 Years)

  • Dodo bird: Extinct in the late 17th century, around 1690. 

  • Steller's sea cow: Extinct in the mid-18th century, around 1768. 

  • Thylacine (Tasmanian tiger): Extinct in the early 20th century, around 1936. 

  • Passenger pigeon: Extinct in the early 20th century, around 1914. 

  • Baiji (Yangtze River dolphin): Extinct in the early 21st century, around 2006. 

  • Great auk: Extinct in the mid-19th century, around 1852.
