In 1789, during the French Revolution, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, a physician and freemason, proposed the use of a special device to carry out executions in France in a more humane manner, aiming for a quicker and less painful death than existing methods.
While Guillotin advocated for the device, it was actually built by French surgeon and physiologist Antoine Louis and German engineer Tobias Schmidt.
Initially, the machine was called a "louisette" or "louison" after Antoine Louis, but later became known as "la guillotine".
Guillotin's proposal was to make executions more humane and equal for all social classes, regardless of their status.
The guillotine became the official method of execution in France, and was used until the death penalty was abolished in 1981.
