In what could be described as a scientific breakthrough, Colossal Biosciences claims to have "de-extincted" the dire wolf, bringing back a species extinct for over 12,000 years, through gene editing and cloning technology.

Scientists at Colossal Biosciences extracted DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull, allowing them to reconstruct the dire wolf genome.

They then used gene-editing technology to alter the DNA of gray wolves, the dire wolf's closest living relative, to include the unique genetic variants of the extinct species.

The edited gray wolf cells were cloned, and the resulting embryos were implanted into surrogate dogs, resulting in the birth of three pups.

The pups, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, are essentially hybrid animals, carrying dire wolf genes but with a 99.9% gray wolf genome.

Colossal Biosciences claims this is the first successful de-extinction of an animal species.

The "de-extinction" of the dire wolf has sparked debate about the ethics of bringing back extinct species and the potential ecological consequences.
